David Spoon: Here’s what’s coming up this hour on today’s Experience. It’s wild and wonderful. What’s going to happen? We have no idea. Let’s sit back and enjoy the ride. Can I get a “Wowser Bowser Wednesday,” because God is in charge of this crazy bus called the Christian journey.

 

First, wow! You guys are in for a treat…maybe. We’re going to review a sermon I preached over 32 years ago…32 years, 11 months, and 2 days ago. It is as pertinent as it was then for today, and probably even more so. Before we get into this very unique teaching, I am giving you a soft encouragement and warning. This does not, this should not, and this will not be for any form of legalism in your life. This is a message that is to challenge you. The purpose is to take this information and draw one step closer to the Lord.

 

Next, we’re going to cover the sin of prayerlessness. That’s right. I did not say, “The lack of the habit of prayerlessness,” and I did not say, “The lack of discipline of prayerlessness.” I want to talk about the sin of prayerlessness. We’re going to discover that prayerlessness is not just a weakness but an actual sin. Could this be one of the greater hidden sins that’s not dealt with? What?

 

What we’ll do is we’ll define prayer. We’ll look at its various aspects and process. Then we’ll understand that this message is not to disregard, in any fashion, the Holy Word God has given us. The purpose of this message is to fire up our engines so we spend more time with God. I’m going to emphasize it because it’s emphasized by God.

 

 

Introduction: David Spoon’s life has been an experience. While growing up in a Jewish family, he made a wrong turn toward drug abuse. David: Isn’t it just like saying, “Ahh, I love it.” Okay. Here’s the whole thing. Ready? Maybe you have a prayer request. Call. Text. Email. Maybe you have a praise report. Call. Text. Email. One way or another, up and down, good and bad, let’s share it together, moving closer together with the Lord.

 

See, the goal here is for everybody to move closer to the Lord. Right? But you don’t just move closer to the Lord with your hands at your side. You put your arms out and help everybody, as everybody is helping everybody, and everybody draws in and gets closer. That’s powerful. That’s the powerful stuff, the closer we get.

 

Now, you might want to just call and share something. That’s totally awesome. If you’re like, “I’d really like to share” or “I’d really like prayer,” but you don’t want to let people know, you can do that on the website. We’ve told you that before. So, I’m going to do the trivia question, and then we’re going to do our DNA, because we didn’t get to do our DNA because we were having a little bit of fun in the teaching and stuff. So, we’re going to do our trivia question. This is an easy one. Even if you call in, we’re going to put you on hold for a minute or two, because I want to make sure we get our DNA in.

 

Here you go. Again, all of these trivia questions are on the Good Samaritan. How many people passed by without helping the person before the Good Samaritan came along in the story Jesus told? So, how many people passed by before the Good Samaritan in the story Jesus told? I will take this moment to say that all of the pastors who say this is a very dangerous road… The only problem is that Jesus is telling the story, and in the story there are people traveling on the road. So it’s like, “Okay, sure.” Let’s do our DNA. D stands for draw closer to the Lord

 

Dynamite D: Daily.

 

David: Oh, if you think that has applied to you in the past, wait till you hear what we’re going to teach today. I’m just going to let that go. You’ll get it. Nnever be ashamed of Jesus or his words. Never be ashamed of what Jesus had to say. People are like, “Well, are you talking about what’s in the gospel?” Nope. Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21.

 

Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus Christ is God, and he is from the very beginning. Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning…” John 1:1: “In the beginning…” You should understand, “Oh, yeah. That’s the connection. Got it. I get it now.” That’s why Jesus is the Word. King of Kings, Lord of Lords…just all of it. Don’t get me going. Then Aalways be ready

 

Dynamite D: To serve.

 

David: To serve. OPM (other people matter). Putting other people on your radar takes a lot of pressure off of you stressing about your own stuff. Additionally, it helps them. Additionally, what a person sows, they shall also reap. Additionally, you get to rejoice with them and help them and be blessed with them, and that’s your brother or sister anyway. You might as well get used to hanging out, because you’re going to be doing that for, oh, a gazillion, trillion, bazillion, zillion years. Okay?

 

All right, great. That’s our DNA. We love it. One more time on the trivia question, and then we’re going to jump into it and see where it goes. How many people passed by without helping him (the person who was in the story of the good Samaritan) before the Good Samaritan came by? How many people passed by? Martin Luther said that prayer is greater than the Devil himself. Interesting. Fascinating statement. Andrew Murray, who wrote multiple books on prayer, said by prayer we are clothed with power from on high. So, as we go through this message, we’re going to find out that there is power in prayer, then there is a weakness in prayer (we’re not going to cover that quite as much), and then there is a sinfulness in not praying.

 

So, let’s start off with the most simplistic elements. What do we know about prayer? What can we say about prayer that would be accurate? Well, prayer has been defined as talking to God, praising God, crying, calling, knocking, requesting, and so on and so forth. A working definition for prayer (it’s going to blow your mind) is any act of communion with God. Listen to that…any act of communion with God.

 

Prayer by its very nature is our pathway to intimacy with God. So, let’s take a look on the powerful, positive side of things at how absolutely incredible prayer is. We’ll just start with our favorite guy that we can in the Old Testament, Abraham, who didn’t have a Bible. Wait, what? See, I’m in right now the Genesis part. I could tell you something that would blow your mind like we did last week. I’m not doing it. Not going to do it.

 

Dynamite D: I’m not going to tempt you, but it’s interesting.

 

David: Abraham didn’t have a Bible. He didn’t have a church, but look at how close he was to God. Genesis 18:17: “Then the Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?'” God was so close to Abraham he wasn’t even going to hide what was going to take place. How close was he?

 

I think most of you know, and we don’t have to go through the whole story right now… Abraham had found out what the Lord was going to do. Abraham, then, gets into this connection, or this relationship, with God. The Lord and Abraham are talking, and Abraham goes, “If there are 50 righteous people, you’re not going to wipe out the city.” God goes, “No. No, no, no.” He takes him all the way down to 10. Here’s what he says. Let me do a couple here.

 

“Abraham said, ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?’ He said, ‘For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.’ Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.’ When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.”

 

This is like a relationship on top of a relationship. This is the engagement God has with his people. How do you think this took place? Listen to this. James 2:23: “And the scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend.” What? I want that.

 

I mean, do you think Abraham had faith? He was the father of faith. Noah acted righteously, but Abraham is considered the father of faith. How did he get so close? Through communion of prayer, for talking to God, for communicating with God. He got so close to God, God wouldn’t even hold something back from him.

 

I have to show you this. You’ve had a friend who has said that to you, and the reason they’ve said that to you is because you’re their friend. Look at this. You’re going to be like, “Oh, wow! That happens all the time in relationships.” It sure does, so it should be happening with us to some degree. Right?

 

You know where we’re going to go with this. You know it’s just going to go on and on. I’m not going to spend the entire time just talking about the positive things, because the fact of the matter is the power that is released in our lives by communing with the Lord… Again, does that communion have to be a specified amount or does it have to be at a specified time?

 

Well, Israel was so committed to the principle they established times of prayer to help people do that. They weren’t trying to be legalistic, but they kind of ended up being legalistic, because once you overdo a rule, you kind of lose your mind on it. There were multiple times of prayer, multiple times to call in. They still do this in the East. In the Muslim countries, they have the call to prayer. Same thing. There’s no difference…except for when we pray, it’s supposed to follow this guy and this model.

 

The way Jesus put it out in the manner of prayer… Prayer and faith are the two big issues that Jesus… Jesus taught more about faith and prayer than he did about love. You might as well just pull it back and go, “Ooh.” He taught almost as much about sin as he did about love, but nobody wants to talk about that, because that also is important. But that’s not the point. I want you to understand the power these people had was because of the time they put in.

 

Dynamite D: Dave, do you know what’s so fascinating with that? I was studying Genesis earlier this morning in my personal devotion, and you really see that communion with Abraham and God. It was counted to him as righteousness because he believed. So literally, faith and prayer right from the beginning.

 

David: Absolutely. If you just go into Genesis 12… Just look at it. We’ll take a break and come back. There’s so much to cover, and we hope we can get it done in this show. In the meantime, I do have to give the answer to the trivia. How many people came along before the Samaritan came along? Two. There was a priest and a Levite in the story. Then the Samaritan came. This is really important stuff, so I don’t want to, by any means, fail to communicate it. I’m going to kind of run it back through so you can follow it and just pick up on a point or two.

 

“As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, ‘Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?’ ‘You can,’ Philip answered, ‘if you believe with all your heart.’ And the eunuch replied, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing.”

 

I have one more point. That’s why I have to split it up this way. Here’s the thing. I know it’s ridiculous to say, but I’m going to say it to you, and it’s important for you to recognize. There are a lot of trials going on right now…in the world, in your life, in your family, in different people’s lives. I understand. It happens for me too.

 

I have a daughter who’s going through the mill. I have a son who’s recovering from COVID. We have all of these things going on and people we love having a hard time, going through the up and the down. You know there’s a lot of that stuff going on. I understand. But there is another part of me that also understands this text. “The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing.” Why was he rejoicing? Because he’s saved. That’s why.

 

All the stuff we go through… It’s a drag. But there is coming this moment where the fullness of the redemption of the salvation that has been granted to us by grace, received by faith from the Father through the Son and by the Holy Spirit… We’re going to get the fullness of that. We’ll be dancing on streets of gold. There won’t be any more pain. There won’t be any more sorrow. There won’t be any more memory of all of the ridiculousness, and it will be awesome. If that’s not a reason to rejoice, then we have lost our minds.

 

We’re going through a difficult spot. Not every spot is difficult. Let’s at least be honest. But if you’re going through it for 60, 70, 80, 90, or 100 years, it has its moments. But there is a salvation that is eternal that doesn’t have a limit to the number. I still say that what Rick Warren wrote in The Purpose Driven Life… That first page is the best page in the entire book. Your life is like 1/16th or 1/32nd of an inch on a 100-mile-long piece of tape. That’s what this life is. It’s important for us to understand that we have a cause for rejoicing, and for all of the pain and the sorrow, there is nobody who ought to rejoice more than us.

I did say that in the beginning of the show. I’m just telling people right off the bat. Here is yet one that might not be too easy, which is why if you can look it up, you may want to.

 

Remember, this is a story Jesus is telling. This isn’t an actual event; it’s a parable. It’s the parable of the good Samaritan. Right? Got it? Okay. A parable is a story used for illustrating to make a point to teach a lesson. Before moving the man in the story, what did the Good Samaritan do for him? Before he moved him, he did one thing in particular. What did he do for him? He did something. Very important.

Brother Fork: No, no, I’m not.

 

David: I think you got yourself in a bind now. It’s too classic. You didn’t bring in Mrs. Knife, and I’m not sure how to do that, what to do with that, but we’ll leave that there. All right. Here we go. Trivia question. Before he moved him, what did the Good Samaritan do for the man who was beat up?

 

Brother Fork: He cleaned his wounds, put on wine, and put a Band-Aid on it.

 

David: He cleaned his wounds. He tended to his wounds. He poured oil and wine, and he took care of him. Yes. He actually did something. He didn’t look at him and go, “Man! You’re a mess.” He did something. That’s one of the parts of the story that probably doesn’t get a lot of hype or attention, but in the story it’s like, “You not only look bad. I’ve got to help you. I’ve got to physically help you, because you’re a mess.” Right? How are you doing, by the way, bro? Are you doing good? We had a nice praise report yesterday. Great job the other day.

 

Brother Fork: Yes. I’m so thankful to God for that provision. It’s making my life stress-free now a little bit.

 

David: A little bit stress-free. That’s great. Excellent job. Anything else happening?

 

Brother Fork: Oh, no. Just praising God and just seeking his face, what’s the next phase for me. And, please, keep praying for my work situation. I just have a little dilemma with somebody. It seems like they don’t like me, or I don’t know. They always try to put something that aggravates me.

 

David: Ah, the aggravation process in the workplace. Don’t you love it? Well, you might feel good about this. I aggravate somebody every single day.

 

Brother Fork: He’s Dynamite D. I’m not a dynamite, so I don’t know how to take it. I’m just an average Joe. Oh, no. I can’t be Joe, because if I was Joe I’d be in the White House. Oh, sorry.

 

David: Good job, brother. Everybody be praying for our brother Samson to give him peace in his workplace. He needs grace and peace where he’s going so he can… You just have to keep persevering, and don’t let the Enemy discourage you. Okay?

 

Brother Fork: Amen.

 

David: Amen, brother.

David: God bless you. Bye-bye. All right. Excellent job there, brother. Really good. Let’s get back into this text, because we’re going to go a little long on this. There’s no way to get around this. You might as well get used to it. All right. The last thing I’m going to say before we jump into the “ouchy, ouchy” stuff is this.

 

We did get this chance to look at Abraham, but I don’t want you to miss that this same kind of mentality was going on with Moses. You guys know this. I’ve reviewed Exodus 33 multiple times, not just with you guys on the show. I do this on a daily basis when I’m praying, because this thing in Exodus 33…

 

If you just look at verse 17 in Exodus 33, it says, “And the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.’ Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.'” To me, he has already spent time with God. He already knows this, that, whatever. You know what this means. It just means, “No, it’s not enough. I want to know you better. I don’t want to do this religiousy stuff.”

 

That’s what every one of us should be. We should have a heart, a spirit, a mind, that goes, “Okay. I’ve done religiousy stuff for ages, and I just don’t want that.” What’s amazing for the Christian is…what? Remember we taught on Hebrews about eight or nine weeks ago, this portion where the Lord tells us…I mean, specifically tells us… In Hebrews 10, it says:

 

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings…”


We can access the presence of God because of the redeeming work of Jesus Christ anytime we want. So, without the guilt trip, the truth is not accessing the presence of God because we’re so distracted and busy with all of the other things in life, not spending time with our actual Creator who gave us breath, is a sin, because you are defying the purpose of your creation by not spending time with your Creator. Sorry. I can’t undo this. I can’t go, “Oh, sorry.”

 

Are you going to go to hell because you don’t spend a certain amount of time in prayer? No, you’re not going to go to hell because you don’t spend a certain time in prayer. You’re going to go through hell because you don’t spend enough time in prayer, but you’re not going to go to hell, because you’ve been redeemed by the work of Jesus Christ. The closer you get to God, it becomes so sustainable in life, they could even crucify you and… Oh, wait, wait. Do you get it?

 

How much communion do we have with God? How many minutes of quality time? Let me make a point of this. I do want to make this point, because this is important. I don’t want you to get legalistic, but I want you to hear what I’m going to say. How many minutes of quality time in his presence, real relationship prayer, do we spend, not counting “pop-up prayer”?

 

Dynamite D: Expound on that a little bit, Dave.

 

David: Pop-up prayer is you praying something in 5, 10, or 15 seconds. There’s nothing wrong with pop-up prayer except that’s not your relationship prayer. That’s pop-up prayer. That’s situational prayer. I’ll just give you an example. I was driving down the road the other day. I saw the residue of an accident. It looked pretty bad. I mean, you see that a lot, right? Do you know what I did? I did a pop-up prayer. “O Lord, don’t let those people be too wounded, and if they are, heal them. And if they don’t know you, let them know you. I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.”

 

That took six seconds and probably didn’t add a lot to my communion time, although I like doing pop-up prayer. I do it on a regular basis, but that’s not the same thing I’m talking about. I’m talking about us being aware of how much time we spend with the one who actually gave us glory, grace, mercy, love, comfort, and eternal life. That is substantially different. I’m not against pop-up prayers. Don’t get me wrong. Don’t get weird on me. But I am very specific about the difference between that.

 

In Matthew 7:22-23 it says, “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'” Now, here’s the thing I want you to catch. These people who do this stuff are connected to Jesus in some capacity, because they’re prophesying in the name of Christ. They’re driving out demons in the name of Christ. They’re performing miracles in the name of Christ.

 

It doesn’t mean they don’t have any connection to Jesus. It just means their connection is all oriented toward work and performance. It has nothing to do with relationship. When he says, “I never knew you…” Epiginosko, knowledge by contact, by experience. That’s what’s being called for. You think, “Whoa! You expect me to spend separated time with God in prayer?” Yes. That is not what I expect; that is what he expects. That’s what he expected of Adam and Eve.

 

Since we’ve been redeemed from the process that separated us in the garden, and then not to do it… Here’s the insanity that walks amongst Christians. “Well, I’m going to spend eternity with God, so I don’t need to spend time with him now.” Really? If you don’t know what it’s like spending time with God now, what makes you think you’re going to have an opportunity to spend time with him later? I don’t even know why you would even think that.

 

If we are not going to access what he has given us to access… I’m not trying to guilt you. I’m trying to just lay it on the line. This is the truth. I am aware of this every day that I live. You don’t think I let things distract me? I love 3D TV. Do you know what God doesn’t do during my 3D TV experience? Talk to me. I’m just saying.

 

Dynamite D: Let me ask you, Dave. This is so good. Do you think a lack of faith and fear of any sort play into this at all?

 

David: I think everything plays into it. I have this follow-up called The Causes of Prayerlessness. This is The Sin of Prayerlessness, and then I have this other message, which I probably should do, and it’s called The Causes of Prayerlessness. So, what is it that causes this? I can tell you right now (and I think everybody would even agree with me) the biggest problem with prayer is distraction. Even when I’m praying, I notice Satan attacking all the time. I just have to go, “Nope. That’s not…”

 

You have to remember something. I’m going to give you a piece of advice that I think will really help a lot of people, and that is this. When Jesus went through the temptations… Just listen to the simplicity of this. When Jesus went through the temptations, what did Satan do? Did Satan push Jesus on the ground and say, “Do what I’m saying”? No. What he did was he made suggestions the entire time.

 

He didn’t force anybody. He’d just say, “Well, you’re the Son of God. If you’re the Son of God, change this rock into bread.” That’s just a suggestion. So, when you’re praying and those outside suggestions come in, you should go, “Ding, ding, ding! I’m not even thinking that. Where did that come from?” It came from Satan or a demon or somebody.

 

“They can put thoughts in my mind?” Anybody can be tempted with anything, anytime, anywhere. You just don’t have to say, “Yes.” The temptation is not a sin, so stop thinking that. You go, “There’s something wrong with me because Satan keeps popping things into my mind.” No. There’s something right with you because Satan is popping things into your mind, especially if you keep saying, “No. No. No. No,” like Jesus did. “No. No. No.” That’s what you do.

 

I just want to point out… Joy said, “Papa prayers” and “pop-up prayers” are both needed. That’s good. That’s a great line. Papa (as in, he’s your Daddy)… Good job, ladies. Then also pop-up prayer when you need it on the spot. All right. Listen. You have been created for that purpose. Let’s just pull everything else back. You weren’t created to work your job; you were created to fellowship with God. Okay. Fulfill your purpose.

The bottom line is what I’m about to share with you does not mean churches are bad. There is a multitude of great churches. Jesus had an address to seven churches in the book of Revelation. Multiple of those churches were excellent. Everybody had something they could improve on, change, grow in. Only two of those churches were super, super bad.

 

The idea behind that is never take what I’m about to share as how the church is at large. This is no indictment on the church of God, the bride of Christ. Never, never, never think of the church that way. The Lord God Almighty loves the church. If you don’t love what God loves, if you don’t love who God loves, that’s a whole separate issue that you have to deal with. Do you understand that?

David: Yes. These ones you can just really, like, “Wow!” I mean, I love this stuff. I hope you guys do too. I hope it’s a blessing in some capacity. David: I don’t know if Jennifer has the Star Wars movies in Blu-ray, but if she doesn’t, that’s what she’s getting for a present. That’s all I’m saying. She’d better have them. If she doesn’t, she’s getting them. Where are we? Oh, yeah. So, our trivia question… I think it’s a pretty good question. The story of the good Samaritan tells of a journey from Jerusalem to…where? Where was the person going in the story?

Let’s go back to this text. I don’t want you to guilt. I want you to be stirred. That’s why I’m trying to be careful, but I’m also not trying to hold back the reality of this. We need to have separated time, non-distracting time. Okay? I know that’s like, “Well, how do you do that?” If you have any companionship at all, like, anybody you’re with… I don’t care who you’re with, a friend or whatever.

 

It is permissible for you to turn off your phone and say, “Hey, leave a voice message. If it’s an emergency, call this number.” There are a lot of things you could do, and don’t tell me, “Gosh, that’s so inconvenient.” Oh, you mean, like, dying for your sins so you can spend time with God inconvenient? You see, you never ask a Jewish person to lay on the guilt because there is no end. You understand that, right? Okay.

 

So, our feelings, our sensing, our knowing of the lack of intimacy that’s inside us is directly related to our sin of prayerlessness. The thing inside of you that goes, “It’s not enough…” Do you want to know how I can tell you that? Because I spend time with the Lord on a pretty regular basis. I’ve been super diligent the last 25 years, and there have been only a few times where I felt like the Lord wanted me to go longer.

 

I tell you, sometimes I pray… For me, not for everybody else. It’s 35 minutes. The other day it was an hour and five minutes. It just depends on what’s going on. I’d been in the Word for 30 minutes. I try to do everything for 32 or 33 minutes. That’s kind of where my low line is. I’d been in the Word for hours, so that’s irrelevant.

 

My point in telling you that is your own connection to God is your gauge. Again, you can’t use my gauge. I’ve prayed before and told the Lord… I’m going to tell you something. I know nobody is going to believe it. I’ve prayed before and spent time with the Lord and got it all done faster because I was in a hurry. Do you ever do that? “I’ve just got to get it in.” Do you know what the Lord said to me? “That’s it?” So, guess what Dave did. I rearranged schedules and said, “Forget it.”

 

Sometimes, just so you know, when I’m driving down here, after I’ve done my Bible reading, because I do that first thing… That, to me, is the thing that gets me going. If I’m driving down here, and if I can make sure that between the morning and the time I arrive here I spend the time in prayer, my day is done. I don’t have to actually do this show to know I’ve done everything I need to do between me and God. I love to do the show, but it’s not required. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea.

 

So, you know for you if you’re spending enough time. Do you know how you know also? After you have spent enough time, you know, “Oh, that was good.” You’re your own witness. Your own spirit is going, “Yeah. We need that. Yeah, let’s do that more.” So, that’s a big part of this whole process.

 

Let me read this passage. Oh, I just freak. This is unbelievable. Second Chronicles 15:10-15. Just listen to this. “They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa’s reign. At that time they sacrificed to the Lord seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder they had brought back.”  By the way, don’t tell PETA.

 

“They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman. They took an oath to the Lord with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns. All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.”

 

If I had a mic… I have a mic, but it’s broken, and if I drop it, it’ll be really loud. That’s a mic drop. You’ve got to be kidding. These people absolutely… They made this commitment to seek the Lord. They made this covenant. It was such a powerful covenant. After the Lord had poured himself out upon them, they said, “It doesn’t matter if you’re a great person or not a great person, a man or a woman.” They didn’t do it to the kids, because kids are younger. Kids get a break.

 

But they took an oath, and everybody rejoiced because everybody took the oath and was sincere. That’s what wholehearted means. They sought God, and he was found by them. So the Lord said, “That’s it. Nobody is touching you.” The Bible says, “When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” I want this.

 

Dynamite D: Dave, I hope our audience is really getting this. Unless it’s just us. It could just be us, Dave, but this is refreshing. It’s like a good workout. It’s so refreshing.

 

David: Yeah. You just have to recognize this is why you were made. This is why you’re still living. I mean, this is part of it. You reflect Jesus Christ, which is absolutely mandate. That’s the absolute mandate. That’s your thing. But this is the thing we need to grasp. When I come back, I’m going to give you one other piece. You’re going to go, “Uh-oh.” Don’t get mad at me. I’m just going to give you one other piece, and just listen. This is what the Lord wants. This is what he wants from you and me every day.

As American people, as people who live in America, we have been granted the right to pursue happiness. I want to make sure you understand what this means. We have a preamble to the United States Declaration of Independence, and the preamble to the Declaration says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

 

I do want to point out it does not say, “Life, liberty, and the provisions for happiness.” In other words, the rights we have in the preamble is that we get to pursue happiness, not that it’s provided for us by the government. That’s kind of an important point for people to recognize. It would be nice if they quit trying to quote our founding fathers and then say they’re entitled to something because of that provision, because it never says that.

Here’s the very last question on the Good Samaritan. Where did the Good Samaritan take the wounded man? In the story that Jesus told, where did he take him? That’s a good question. Where did he take him? I mean, he didn’t take him to Disneyland. You shouldn’t go there anyway, but that’s not the point. The point is where did he take him?

David: Okay. Here’s the question. I’m going to let D decide. I have the ultimate clue. Where did the Good Samaritan take the wounded man in the story?

 

Dynamite D: Give the clue.

 

David: All right. Ready? Here it is. Here’s the clue. A guy stops a nuclear bomb from going off in the middle of the capital, and they say, “Are you a bomb expert?” and he goes, “No, but I did spend the night at a…” That’s a great clue. All right. Here’s the end of this. That’s 2 Chronicles 15:10-15. You should study that. That’s very, very powerful. Not to be outdone, because you can’t really outdo that. Scripture supports Scripture. That’s the whole point. Matthew 6:5-6: “And when you pray…” Now we’re getting some instruction. “…do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

 

What’s their reward? That they were seen. That was it. That’s the only reward they’re going to get. Verse 6: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” The whole point is to be separated.

 

Do you know why Jesus got up early in the morning and went out late at night to pray in solitude? Because that’s how you have to do it when you’re doing the relationship. That’s why. Just to give you a fun… Now listen. Suspend your brilliant eschatological understanding on Revelation. Don’t tell me this is this or this is this. Just listen from a prayer point of view. Please. That’s all I’m asking. Revelation 5:6-8:

 

“Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.”

 

The prayers God’s people make are incense to the nostrils of God. You can’t make this up. Do you ever walk into a barbecue place, and you walk in the doors, and you’re skipping a beat? Do you ever walk into a bakery and you’re going, “Oh, hello”?

 

Dynamite D: They mean business.

 

David: You know walking in, “Hello! I have arrived.” Right? Well, that pleasurable process… In fact, I can just tell you, being in Michigan, we would eat at the Chop House, and the Chop House was right next to the Wonder Bread factory on purpose. You would go into the place, and you could just smell the bread from the Wonder Bread factory. You know, as soon as you walk in there, people are drooling. That was a brilliant setup, by the way.

 

Here’s the deal. God sees your prayers like that. I mean, that’s how precious. God delights in them. He enjoys them. They come before his throne, and he enjoys them. These are all not just motivators, because I probably will do the causes of our prayerlessness, but they are things to say to us, to our face, you can’t avoid praying. That’s a sin, because it defies everything God generated. The purpose of mankind is to spend time with God. So, we get the redeeming way back through Jesus Christ, and we don’t use it? Uh-oh.

 

Do you want to really distinguish authentic, genuine Christianity from non-authentic? Nobody in the universe will know about your prayer time except for God. How’s that? Only God knows. It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks. They don’t have a heaven to put you in anyway. Spend time with your Maker. He made you.

 

Do you think you were an accident? Just read John, chapter 1. “Born of the will of God.” “No. The whole thing was an accident. It was just this. It was this. That’s why evolution came around.” Nobody ever said how evolution got one and one to come out at the exact same time, and then to be able to create a third, but we’ll just move on from that.

 

Here’s the point. God is waiting, so to speak. He knows when you’re going to and not going to. He is omniscient. But we need to move. We need to fire up the jet engines. We need to push it. We need to say, “You know what? This is my time, and nothing interferes.” That doesn’t mean if there’s an emergency you don’t… Don’t get weird on me. But you make it the same priority you make to watch that show you watch or to separate yourself after work so you can do… Same priority but higher.

 

Where did the Good Samaritan take the wounded man? “I stopped a nuclear bomb yesterday.” “Are you a nuclear physicist?” “No, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn.” The inn. That’s where. Come on. That’s a good one. That was a good hint, right?

 

Dynamite D: Pretty good. Would “motel” count or do we have to say “inn”?

 

David: The inn. The whole point was the inn. Then, remember, for the good Samaritan story, for Mary and Joseph there was no room at the inn.

 

Dynamite D: Very good point.

 

David: Oh, they connect. Yeah, the Lord does know what he’s doing, doesn’t he? All right. We’ll take our break for the day and come back tomorrow.
